- APL STEAM Experience 2026
Description
The Applied Physics Laboratory STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, & mathematics) Experience is now accepting applications for Summer 2026 until March 15th, 2026 at 11:59 PM PST. The program aims to provide students with the opportunity to create and develop an art piece focused on and inspired by the scientific research project of their partner APL COSZO SURP intern. STEAM-E interns will participate in professional development, build community with other young scientists and artists, and learn about pathways to a career in oceanography. The internship will be hosted by the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) at the University of Washington’s Seattle campus from June 22, 2026 to August 21, 2026. The program will provide 2 interns with a $7000 stipend. Limited funding may be available for housing and travel to and from Seattle, WA if necessary.
APL SURP interns will focus their scientific research projects on the NSF-funded Cascadia Offshore Subduction Zone Observatory (COSZO), which will inspire the STEAM-E interns’ art piece. There will be a 2-week cruise associated with APL COSZO SURP, which STEAM-E interns may have the opportunity to join. Cruise dates will likely occur in August towards the end of the summer program or right afterward. Participation in the research cruise is not required for STEAM-E interns.
