- PhD in Math Education-Graduate Teaching Assistantship
Description
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado (UNCo) is accepting applications for its PhD program in Mathematics Education, for 2026-2027 academic year.
The PhD in Mathematics Education program is designed for graduate students interested in mathematics teaching and learning in grades 6–14. Our approach to mathematical pedagogy emphasizes that a deep understanding of mathematics is essential for:
Teaching students mathematics effectively,
Engaging in mathematics education research, and
Supporting meaningful reform in mathematics education.
The program integrates three strands—mathematics, mathematics education, and teacher preparation for grades 6–14—and is well suited for:
Individuals with graduate-level mathematics experience who wish to pursue research in mathematics education, become Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education (RUME) scholars, or prepare future mathematics teachers (grades 6–12).
Secondary mathematics teachers who want to continue their education and transition into leadership roles in K–12 settings or faculty positions in higher education.
Many of our students receive Teaching Assistantships (TAs) to help offset living costs and some fees. We provide a tuition waiver for all TAs during the first four years of the program (i.e., no tuition is paid by the graduate student; however, insurance and other student fees are the responsibility of the student).
