Description

Overview:

The Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division (NEFCD) performs a wide range of scientific, technical, and programmatic activities in all facets of the nuclear enterprise. These activities encompass nonproliferation research and research and development (R&D) pertaining to nuclear materials processing. NEFCD has responsibility for much of the nuclear chemical processing and radiochemistry that is performed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). In particular, the Uranium Process Chemistry (UPC) Group applies chemistry, chemical engineering, and nuclear engineering fundamentals to understanding gas and effluent processes associated with the nuclear fuel cycle in support of nuclear nonproliferation, safeguards and security, and national security.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform hands on research with radioactive, toxic, and corrosive materials to support gas handling and other research efforts
  • Design, fabricate, maintain, and utilize gas manifolds to perform gas and effluent studies
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary, multi-laboratory environment consisting of chemists, physicists, experimentalists, and engineers developing and demonstrating applied research
  • Contribute to technical papers, journal articles, reports, and proposals for internal and external release, and represent the organization and sponsors via technical presentations in workshops and conferences
  • Demonstrate results-oriented behavior, be able to work independently and in a team environment, thoroughly document work performed, and communicate work performed to peers and project sponsors

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  •  PhD in Chemical, Nuclear, or Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Oceanography, or related discipline completed within the last 5 years
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working around radioactive materials and a DOE safety culture
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and self-starter
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary environment and ability and willingness to perform hands on work, and learn new skills

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
