The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is now accepting Letters of Intent (LOIs) for the 2026–2027 Career Awards at the Scientific Interface (CASI) cycle.
LOIs require submission of a 4,000 character-essay and a letter of reference. These awards provide up to $560,000 over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the first three years of faculty service. The specific target group are researchers who are transitioning from graduate work in the physical/mathematical/computational sciences or engineering into postdoctoral work that utilizes these methods to address biological questions. These awards are open to U.S. and Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and temporary residents.
NOTE: CASI provides postdoctoral stipend support of up to $80,000 (initial year) and $85,000 (second year) with up to $5,000/year allowed for caregiving expenses.

Requirements
The following is a high-level summary of requirements. Please review the RFP for a complete explanation of the eligibility requirements.
- Open to U.S. and Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or temporary residents.
- Must hold a PhD in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, statistics, or engineering; related fields (e.g., biochemistry or biomedical sciences) may qualify with demonstrated expertise in these areas.
- Must have completed 12–60 months of postdoctoral research by the full application deadline of January 11, 2027.
- Must be pursuing a full-time research career as an independent investigator at a nonprofit U.S. or Canadian institution, including universities, research institutes, and affiliated teaching hospitals.
- Applicants may not hold or have accepted a tenure-track assistant professor position at any stage of the application process.
